Tamil Tigers roar no more

According to the Sri Lankan government the Tamil terrorists are finished. The military leader of the terrorists is dead. This is welcome news for the Sri Lankans who have endured so much suffering at the hands of the Tamils. We shall see in the fullness of time whether this claim is true. For the time being, however, the Sri Lankans are jubilant.

So how was this victory achieved? Not by negotiations, not by being told to make friends with the Tamils and certainly not by giving in to their threats of further terrorism.

The victory was achieved by military force. Sadly, many Tamil civilians were displaced and many were killed. Thousands in fact. What is very noticeable, but not surprising, is the lack of protest from the rest of the world about the military tactics used by the Sri Lankan army.

Is Sri Lanka going to be admonished in the U.N? Are there protests in universities and on the streets of the Western World against the killing of thousands of Tamils? Amazing isn’t it, how there is one rule for the rest of the world and another for Israel.

If Israel decides to defend itself against 4000 missiles being launched against it, then Israel is wrong. Sanctions are called for. The UN throws a fit because Israel has had enough of suicide attacks. What a double standard this is!

My advice to Israel is to do whatever it has to do to ensure that its citizens can live in safety. I also believe that no matter what Israel does, and it certainly does everything possible to ensure that it is careful in its reprisals, it will always be regarded as the aggressor.

It should, therefore, act responsibly to protect itself. This should be done ethically because it is a civilised nation which allows everyone to vote in elections, even Palestinians who can elect their own representatives to the Knesset (Israeli parliament). But I strongly believe that Israel should do whatever it needs to do in the face of bigotry and concerted activities by left-wingers and Arab militants who are in cahoots because they want the destruction of the state of Israel. Why supposed freedom-loving lefties can join those who are against personal freedom and women’s rights used to intrigue me.

I have now stopped being intrigued by the question of two opposites working in unison. In my opinion, these two diametrically opposed ideologies are brought together by anti-semitism. It’s as simple as that. It’s not about Palestinians or Middle East Peace Processes. It’s about hatred. Why this is so no longer interests me. All I know is that Israel should look after its own people in the face of reprehensible racial prejudice and give less of a damn about what its enemies think and say.

Therese Rein makes Downunder cringe with embarrassment

Imagine going to a memorial service in Westminster Abbey for the victims of the Australian bushfires and not wearing a hat. No prizes for guessing who committed that fauz pas. It was the Aussie Prime Minister’s wife, Therese Rein, who looked like a country bumpkin compared with Prince Charles’ wife, Camilla. The Duchess of Cornwall was suitably dressed and wore a hat, which is the right thing to do. But Therese decided that her frizz was respectful enough.

During her travels with Kevin Rudd, Therese has been looking ridiculous as usual with her knee-popping boots, giant sleeves and tight belts, and even today she wore some ballooning black coat which was pinching her snuggly under the bosom area. Too tight, Therese…

Isn’t it about time that Mrs Rudd said farewell to her delusion that she has a waist? A classically tailored sheath and coat minus the belt or sash which she clings to in memory of her long lost waist, would look so much more flattering. And please can someone lend her a blow dryer?

So not only does she lack flair, she is also ignorant of etiquette which is evident in her unsuitable get-up at the Memorial Service. Surely some protocol aids should be briefing her on what to wear to a Cathedral.

Do I really believe that Therese is going to change? No, not for a minute. She has earned the tag of being to be the most unpopular First Lady that we have had in many years. The most popular one was Hazel Hawke by a mile and I think that few people would dispute that description. Hazel had class and compassion. Therese Rein has neither.

Quite frankly, if Mrs Rudd doesn’t want to behave like a lady I wish she would stay home or at her office and stop embarrassing the Australian public.

Foetal alcohol syndrome among Australian Aborigines

There is a major problem in the Aboriginal communities of Northern Australia. Babies are being born with foetal alcohol syndrome because 90% of women in those communities continue to drink throughout their pregnancies. So what is the Australian Hotels Association asked to do? Stop selling alcohol to pregnant Aborigines. This has to be one of the silliest ideas ever. Continue reading

Melbourne’s obsession with sport

For four days now we have been subjected to the most intolerable noise pollution. On the first day, my husband thought it was an alarm that had gone crazy. On the second day and third days I thought there was an excavator at work in our area. By the fourth day I realised that we were victims of the Formula One car racing event.

The noise can be heard over most of Melbourne and it sounds like a howling wind. As if that’s not bad enough yesterday we thought we were being attacked by suicide bombers as in New York in 9/11. They were the supersonic jets that were part of the fanfare.

Now I’m not an environmentalist but think of the EMISSIONS or black balloons or carbon footprints (lol) of those cars and those jets. Ironic, don’t you think, that we should also be switching off our lights for an hour on Earth Day at the same time that those cars and jets have been fouling up the atmosphere for the past four days.

One of the spectators, some young kid of six was interviewed by a TV crew on the way to the car races. When he was asked what he looked forward to the most, the budding hoon said that he looked forward to seeing the cars crash. Ain’t sport uplifting! Oh yes, and doesn’t it make pots of money too.

Nick D’Arcy gets a slap on the wrist for assault

Once again Australian courts have let us down. Nick D’Arcy, who viciously aussalted a fellow swimmer and damaged his face for life has been let off jail. Why? Because he’s a sportsman and in Australia all is forgiven if you are a sportsman. So D’Arcy, who’s no example to young people, is going to be turned into some kind of hero if he wins a race. I suspect it wouldn’t matter if he murdered someone as long as he can swim for Australia. Continue reading

Here we go again with Muslim students’ demands

When we came to Australia we were happy to be allowed to live in peace in a democratic country. We did not demand to be given special consideration and we were happy to fit in. If some things seemed different to us then we adapted to them. That’s what you do when you come to live in another country. You don’t expect that country to change things to please you. If you would like something to change then you go about it in a civilised manner. You put forward your reasons and perhaps accept a compromise. But you don’t threaten and you don’t demonstrate and hold protest marches. So whom am writing about? No surprises for guessing that it’s the Muslim students again. Continue reading

The Right to Defend Oneself

An elderly couple were hiding in their bedroom after two home invaders entered their home in a winery in Perth, Australia. On entering the house the invaders bashed down the door of the bedroom belonging to 77 year-old, Eugenio Valenti and his incapacitated wife. Mr Valenti warned them not to enter. They ignored his warning and entered anyway. So a struggle ensued in which one of the home invaders was shot in the stomach. Mr Valenti, himself, was injured and his gun was taken away from him. The pair of thieves ran off with Mr Valenti’s gun. When one injured home invader presented himself at a hospital for treatment, he was arrested.

Now there is discussion about whether Mr Valenti should be charged with using “unreasonable force”. Continue reading
