Latest Ford advertising on Australian TV is annoying

There are some TV commercials that are so annoying  they become a cult thing.  We can’t stand them because the actors in them are irritating, dumb or just plain unappealing. But they work on a subconscious level because the people in them strike a chord with the viewers as does the iSelect commercial,  for example.

Take the Trivago advertisement for hotel bookings, as another example.  An attractive man meets a rather long-nosed plain woman in a hotel and they get together. Every girl’s fantasy, you might say. The message is that even a rather ordinary woman can find love in one of the hotels that Trivago lists on its site.

It’s not an original concept but it works because  it promises romance.

In the same vein the Crown Casino ad promoting a fun weekend for an ordinary couple will work as well because it’s the average Aussies who will  find something beguiling about romping around in such an environment.

In my opinion, however,  the TV commercial for Ford vehicles does not resonate with anyone.  Yes, it’s annoying because the woman in the ad looks unfriendly as she hops around the set like some sort of manic rabbit.  So it’s memorable, but for all the wrong reasons.

Does she have any plausible connection with the product,  Ford trucks?

No way.

Doesn’t a tradie just want a truck that works well, is reliable and has some oomph, some vroom  and gets the job done?  He doesn’t really want some prissy female telling him what he should do.

Why does she bounce around so much?  Why does she look so harsh and bitchy?  Would you visit a Ford showroom or lot or whatever after watching her prance around looking so off-putting?

Granted that these Ford commercials are not directed at me and are not meant to suck me in,  I wonder if they have attracted any tradesmen at all.

p.s  added on the 24th May

Ford Australia has just announced it will shed about  440 jobs because their cars are not selling. Now I’m not saying it is the fault of the latest Ford ad but it certainly didn’t help, did it?

  1. Hullo Lili
I have to report that I’m quite neutral abt the Ford ads. However, there are some atrocious ads that should be watched once, simply to imprint the advertiser’s name in memory. For instance, the Emporia toilet paper ad: any company stupid enough to buy that ad would surely be quite incapable of manufacturing effective rectal stationery!!!

    Cheers M.

    • I think the Australian “Actress” in the Ford Ads is without the most irritating person ever to invade my TV Screen. And she needs a new hair dresser. I can’t believe Ford Management thinks she’s helping their lost cause ?

      • Dave, I think that Ford is under the impression that any advertising, even if it’s negative, is better than none. Toyota’s Hi-Lux has beaten Ford sales this year according to reports. So the ad is not doing them any good. Ford also misleads the public when it advertises that it is the only maker that gives a loan car during services. That is not true. Toyota is doing this but not bragging about it.

      • The way you keep pushing this I’d guess that you work for another car company, and anyway, maybe if she saw you she might think the same thing. Everyone’s beautiful in their own way. Get a life.

      • Jeff, I haven’t pushed it at all. I only said I don’t like the ad because the girl in the ad has a rather unappealing way of bouncing around as she walks. If you read my blogs on advertising you would see that I admire some commercials such as the Jeep Renegade ad’s music.
And no, I don’t work for another car company. I was a professional TV critic for The Courier Mail which gives me some insight into the world of television. I was also a teacher and examiner and taught media studies. Hence my special interest in communication.
By the way, I never said that the Ford lady was ugly. She is simply annoying as many readers of this blog have pointed out. Surely I have the right to an opinion without being told to get a life.
Yes Jeff, if the actress saw me she might think the same thing but I’m not performing on television.

  2. YES! She is so bloody irritating. I am not sure why exactly. Her prissiness is just aggravating. No wonder Fords sales are dropping.

  3. I dislike the Ford advert that assumes that no other firm gives a loan car and that we all have to sit at the bus stop when the car is in dock. Load of rubbish! Honda forever.

  8. So glad to hear that I’m not the only one annoyed by the ‘Ford girl’, so much so that this is the first time I’ve felt the need to comment (on anythjng ever) publicly. When first aired, my radar went off and I commented to my husband that she must have been ‘related’ to someone to get the gig as she really could not have acted her way in, and even more convinced when she reappeared in yet another. It’s obvious they tried to coach her out of her ‘way of speaking’ ,however, she slips back into her clipped (very bad acting) voice half way thru. Sorry girly, it appears Adrian is the only one who’s sweet on you and, apparently, blinded by your looks!

    • I could have written this exact comment, word for word what I’ve said to people about her being unlikeable, robotic, fake and wondered who she was related/married to/sleeping with to have gotten the gig at all! The Toyota girl I like. But this girl? Even now with her new hair and coaching etc, still very very unappealing. Love your comment lol

      • It’s a funny thing, Louise, that many of the men seem to defend her. The meaner she looks the more she appeals to a certain kind of man, if you get my drift. I think that from now on I may imagine her wielding a whip.

  9. Lili, yes I’m committing that awful crime of criticism on social media, having avoided & even tut, tutted others for so long, however, I consider this as more of a conversation among like – minded people.
I mainly have issue with her voice & even wince from another room as I always feel the need to mute her if I can reach the remote in time. If I do see her accidentally, it just annoys me unreasonably as the ad is often re – repeated during certain programs (Ford must have a warped sense of humour perhaps) & I want to scream at her to get a coach & listen to them & not her family who must have convinced her of a talent that is not apparent yet (now I’m starting to sound like a weirdo).
I’m not sure why or what exactly it is that irks me so much, however, I’m feeling ever so chuffed that it’s not just me objecting, and as badly as I really do feel about picking on her, someone really does need to tell her straight & soon that she can’t act!
If for some reason she becomes a ‘celebrity of sorts’ it’ll be for all the wrong reasons and she’ll continue to haunt us – think rabbit ears & the bum dance – unnecessarily (hmm…wonder why I thought of that analogy ) 😥

  10. Pretty girl succeeding by being pretty, lets diss her on the internet…..
Clever choice by ford, shes pretty, but not too much, young, perky and fresh; exactly how ford are marketing themselves.

It clearly works for ford. Theyve used the same actress for a year, it didnt work for toyota, their ‘girl’ ad lasted a week…

Now, the iinet guy, i select guy, and meerkats?

Maybe they put these annoying smug people on their ads on purpose
but these people are very annoying in a subtle way which is difficult to
    Put into words.

  13. Let’s face it, the annoying bint on the Ford ads looks like someone stuck a toothpick into an orange, put a wig on it and waved it around.

The only ad more condescending is the Holden one with the little girl telling us how much we have to look forward to from Holden with all the new models they’re bringing to Australia. Shame about the jobs though hey?

    • When I read your comment this morning, Chris, you really made me laugh. Brilliant description of that “prancing woman on pep pills.” Since that ad came on TV I can’t bear that blue colour that Ford uses. I know that is a ridiculous reaction on my part but she is certainly a turn-off.

  19. Her name is Ngaire Dawn Fair, she’s a stage actress from Melbourne, and I think she’s a very charming young lady. If you wonder why actors speak, move or behave in a certain way in ads, the answer is very simple: because the director tells them to.

    Like

    • Paul, there are commercials that are appealing and others that aren’t. The Ford woman has an irritating way of moving and speaking. Granted that the director is to blame for his poor directing, that does not make her likeable. She has very small eyes, a tinny voice and an unfriendly expression. Apart from that, Paul, she is perfect!

She is gorgeous to look at and guess what….SEX SELLS….FACT!!

What IS truly sad is that there is obviously a large section of the Australian viewing public who’s parents have been mating with vegetables and spend their time watching ads in the first place!
Actually I apologise for that last comment. It would be impossible NOT to watch ads as they make up 90% of viewing time in Australia.
    ABC forever!

    • Narelle, nobody is saying anything about her character. People simply don’t like the ad and the way that the commercials people have directed her to act. Ford sales are still not doing well, so perhaps the commercials aren’t helping. Her career will suffer if she keeps on doing what she’s doing in the ads. And that’s very regrettable.

  23. Lili gans, I saw your comment here which you seem to have removed – something about the ford girls “skinny butt”. Smart move removing it as it gave an insight onto your true motives for rallying hate around this innocent actor.
I am going to say it – you are fat and jealous. Prove me wrong if you can.
She is gorgeous and is just doing her job. And you are a keyboard warrior full of bile and hate about your body and this is your way of taking it out on her.
Stop it. She has done nothing to you. Leave her alone and learn how to change channels.

  26. Also glad to know it’s not just me. I’m glad they have taken her out of the kitten heels so she doesn’t walk like a puppet from Thunderbirds as much. I just bought an i30 – didn’t look at the comparable Fords due to their irritating ads. I’m sure she is a delightful person but her acting is atrocious and disingenuous.
